gestures of thought: vibrate contact

an homage to Alan Lamb

At the beginning of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s final film „Trois couleurs: Rouge“ the camera follows a (unanswered) phone call through its physical media: phone line, transatlantic deep sea cable, switches and wires. I remember, how this movie opening made me aware that a medium like the telephone line is never just a technical device but also a bodily extension. As my voice vibrates within the ear and body of the person I am speaking to, so does the wire across which I send my message. The wire sings – as in the sound installations of Alan Lamb – the whole world begins to tremble, my skin as much as the telephone pole, the cells of my body as well as the electrons in the cable. In vibration we are in contact.
